I think the Artist's Way book played a big role in getting me to make a
commitment to creativity, and take a risk, and "identify myself' as
creative. I didn't love being "talked to" like a recovering drug addict,
and the author's name dropping/horn blowing got a bit much. I also think
she has marketed this idea pretty aggressively, along the lines of
"chicken soup for the (fill in target audience here)" series.
Having said that, this book is on the very short list of "life changing
reading" for me. It challenges you, shakes you out of your complacency,
calls your bluff. Inspirational writing, in spots... but without
question this book is more important for the questions it asks. I think
it REQUIRES the writing and "morning pages", even for folks who don't
love writing. For me, skipping that part would be like wanting to make
great pots without wedging, centering, throwing, wedging, centering,
throwing, wedging, centering, throwing...endless difficult unrewarding
pots... hard work, but it takes you somewhere...
Just my view! I think this book is a great one to do with a group...
Yours, Kelly in Ohio (Happy to find my sourdough starter can spend a few
weeks in the freezer and come back good as new... crumbs in the
keyboard...)
