Dear Michael McDowell,
Given the variety of lids and closures which can be put on a pot, the =
inset gallery is just one option. I suggest when the unglazed gallery =
option is used, that the pot is fully finished to avoid the harsh =
grinding sound which issues when the lid is turned in the gallery. This =
does not require spoons full of valve grinding paste and the intention =
is not to produce a gas tight auto style valve seal between lid and pot. =
The contents are not being hermetically sealed.
In some instances, where the clay may have a high permeability, it =
could be essential to have a glazed gallery. Clays which are slightly =
underfired will stain very badly using the waxed rim technique.
A little tip for grinding unglazed galleries, one I have given before. =
Three spots of Olive Oil at equal intervals around the seat. Pop the lid =
into place and forcibly twist it round, lift it move it around and then =
twist hard down again. Do this three or four times and you remove the =
high projections which cause the grating sound. The surface is not =
lapped, remains unpolished.
All the best,
Ivor
