black clay in texas

updated wed 27 mar 02

Brenda Shepard on sun 24 mar 02

While I was at NCECA I stop at a booth that was giving away Blackjack Clay. I understand that it's a pretty good clay. I got my clay the other day so we will see if it's any good. You might call the company it's not very far from Athens Texas to give you a reference point. Good Luck.

Blackjack Clay, the owner's name is John
Morrison, and the phone number is (903) 469-3322.
The clay is the most plastic and the cone range is 06 to 10.

I'm in Austin. I'm testing the Blackjack clay now. If it turns out to be
something I want to continue to work with, I've reconciled myself to driving
to Murchison periodically to load up the pickup truck. There's got to be a
way to ship economically, but I haven't figured it out. wanda

You are correct. It's a nice light buff color. Where are you in Texas. If
you're in or near Houston we can combine orders and save on the shipping,
which is more than the clay costs.

It is my understanding the Blackjack Clay fires to a buff color, not black.
Am I wrong? Wanda

Blackjack fires light gray at Cone 10 "normal" reduction and dark gray Cone
10 "heavy reduction. It is a very smooth, plastic throwing clay.
Blackjack bisques to an off white.

Wanda, the only way to ship economically is tonnage. The more clay the
cheaper it is to ship on a per pound basis. It costs the shipper roughly the
same amount of money to ship a thousand pounds on the back of the tuck as it
does 3 tons.
Unfortunately Austin and Houston have a proximity problem that will not
mitigate the shipping cost problem. Enjoy the clay.
