I am looking for a firing chart that gives cone number and then temp C and
temp F. Thanks!

Clint,

Check out the Orton Ceramics cone equivalent web site.

http://www.ortonceramic.com/center/cone_ref.html

Keep in mind, the cones are evaluated by the rate of temperature rise in the
kiln, not the final temperature. I have had an electric,
computer-controlled kiln over fire and melt all the cones in the pat because
I had too little in the kiln.

Hope this helps,

Clint,
Orton produces this chart. You may find acopy at your local supplier or can
get one from Orton. You can also find this info in almost any ceramic book
or on the Orton web site: www.ortonceramic.com

Best regards,

Tim

Does anyone have a firing chart they would be willing to share? We have been
using the one that came in the Oxyprobe manual but it got rained on and in
many ways could be improved.

I will be glad to mail an Orton cone firing chart to anyone who sends me
their postal address. The chart also includes other data such as loading
guidelines, degrees C/F temperature conversions, etc.

I should have been clearer in what I am looking for. When we fire we like to
plot the temps every hour and get a record of how fast we our firing. We
find this a get way to tell what if happening as we fire and we write notes
all over it both before and after to refer back to at a later date. You end
up with a picture of how the temps moved up. I would really like a recording
pyrometer but I have not found one in any of the clay stores and I think it
would be very expense to buy one designed for the big commercial market. If
I can't find a chart I will make one, maybe using excel, get a nice grid and
have temps in F and C going up and time cross. Then plot a line going
slow,150f/hr up to ~1100 and then 300/h to ^ 10. I was thinking maybe one of
the schools may have already done this with recommended firing curves
plotted on it.

We do have the Orton cone charts and find them a good reference although
with our kiln and pyrometer ^10 always bends before the chart would have it.
Thanks for the offer.

I would greatly appreciate it if you would forward 2 charts - one for the
Waterloo Potters' Workshop and one for my personal studio.

I use the Fluke 54-2. It's not cheap, but it's way cheaper than an Oxyprobe
(about 1/3 the price). When I see the data, recorded at five minute
intervals over nearly two days, plotted out, the price is the last thing on
my mind.

I just happened to notice an advertisement for cartons of cigarettes at a
market that I stopped at recently. The Fluke 54-2 will set you back about
the same amount as five cartons of cigarettes in this area. Or ten bottles
or less of decent wine. Five to ten dinners for you and your spouse in a
restaurant. It's not a huge investment and it's well worth it.

You should see the temp chart from my last firing. It's a disaster - or what
we sometimes refer to as a "learning experience".

For those of you with long memories for trivia - Yes, it was me who argued
for the benefits of analog pyrometers. But I was firing a small raku kiln at
the time, and analog did just fine for me. When firing a much larger gas
kiln and trying to keep it in reduction while still making headway in
temperature, a digital pyrometer is a godsend.

Arnold--would certainly appreciate an orton firing chart--I'm having the hardest time firing now to ^5/6. Address is 4048 US Hwy 209 Stone Ridge NY 12484 Carolyn Leung

Dear Dan Pfeiffer,
Get into Radio Shack or one of the Electronic supply houses and have a
look at Multimeter Data Logger style of instrument. These come wit a
program that allows you to download information relating to time and
temperature into a PC or Lap Top. I would imagine you would get one
for less that $150us. They are about $300Au. You could get a min by
min record over about twenty hours with one of these and see the
effects of any change in fuel input except O2/CO/CO2 ratios.
Best regards
Ivor Lewis.
