You might be able to drive across the border into Tijuana, but it was
the scariest thing I ever did. If you have never driven in Mexico, you
are in for a treat. Stop at the border and buy Mexican vehicle
insurance, at the very least check with your own insurance company
before doing it. I was SO happy to get my relatively new Ford Explorer
back on the US side of the border! The Zebra WAS GREAT!

Hey y'all,

How close is Mexico from the conference site?

Hi Lisa
San Diego and Tijuana, Mexico are across the border from each other.
You can take the already oft mentioned trolley to the border and walk
over to Tijuana, as well as drive, etc.
This weekend I happened to meet with some ceramic artists from Baja,
Ensenada and Tijuana who now are excited and planning to come to NCECA.

I hope there is additional representation from Mexican Artists and
Potters at NCECA as there are some dedicated artists and some good work
coming from there.
Of course NCECA will provide a massive amount of info on everything
imagineble. In addition there are websites on public transport,
accommodations, maps, restaurants, etc. As it draws nearer folks will be
posting links and info...little tidbits of this and that., but we are
still pretty far off from the conference.
worse than waiting for Santa!
cheerio!

Earl is right, driving in Mexico is not a lot of fun...it can be very
dangerous -especially at night since Mexicans seem to like to drive without
head lights. As I recall, The Mexican border crossing is about 17miles from
San Diego.

You are usually NOT covered by your own insurance (remember you are in a
different country)and need to buy extra at the border. It is expensive.

Personally, I much prefer to park the vehicle on the US side and walk
across. We walked all around town and had a lot of fun for the day. You
can also take a cab but be prepared to be fleeced.

Be cautious, certainly. Contact your insurance company to be certain of
your coverage, absolutely. But if you really want to get beyond walking
distance of the border, don't be too discouraged by these posts. This Texan
has no qualms about driving in Mexico. I don't know Tijuana, but Neuvo
Laredo is one of my favorite places. The Mexican people are by and large
wonderfully friendly and helpful. Wanda
