waterfall brown on flat tiles

I fired 6" terra cotta tiles with the Waterfall brown glaze from the
Mastering Glazes book. I fire my tiles at 275 degrees per hour to cone 6.
I don't normally program a soak into my firing, but I did the recommended 20
minutes. Cones 5, 6, and 7 were all down. My shelves are spaced 3" apart
all the way up, so I don't have to program in a slow cool down, it happens
naturally, actually slower than the book suggests.

The glaze is beautifully layered - black on the bottom, rusty orangey middle
ground and the bluey-greeny haze floating on the top. A perfect match to the
cover of the book.

Sometimes glazes don't look as good on a flat surface as they do on a pot,
but this one's a beauty. I also glazed a carved tile - a chunky oak leaf,
but I didn't like that at all, too much movement.

The bullnose tiles I glazed had some pinholes, but I think the glaze was too
thin. I only got the black and rusty-orangey, no blue haze which I really,
really like. Really.

Next test will be without the 20 minute soak (just the soft fire) to see if I
get the same results.
