Gee,some of yah know how to burst a bubble. I really
have been working hard and I haven't been able to turn
out any decent pots. I thought I had my problem licked
when we discovered the wheel head wasn't level. And I
have been working in pottery for the last 3 years.
However, after reading the email post I decided I
better go into more detail.
When I said that the wheel head wasn't level I was
talking about the wheel itself. When I sit down at the
wheel the plate I put my bats on is tilted down about
2 degrees. I don't know how it happen or when it
happen. The only reason that it was notice is because
I put the wheel up on bricks. I was able to change
wheels but only for the weekend because come Monday my
friend will want her wheel back. So I sill have to get
the wheel fix or do something else. I haven't been
able to buy my own wheel yet. sigh.......:>(
I really don't see how you can throw a cylinder when
the wheel isn't leveled? I have enough problem when
the wheel is level. When I am raising my cylinder my
walls are thick on one side and too thin on the other.
Also at the top of the vessel it's out of round. My
wheel doesn't wobble. (I might wobble that could be
the problem.)
I work in a university studio and because of reasons
unknown to me my professor is burned out and doesn't
teach much anymore. So what I learn I learn from
fellow students or trail and error. And lately it has
been more error than anything.
I been looking for workshops on throwing but I haven't
found any yet here in Texas. Maybe it's to early and I
will be able to find one this spring or summer. I
would like to lick this problem before I finish
school. As a non traditional student I will have to go
to work full-time soon. So I will have to find a new
place to work in the evenings and weekends. I was
thinking of renting a storage unit but it gets so hot
here in Texas so I will have to think on that problem.
I will be graduating this May if I can pass math!
Anyway Thanks for help... any suggestion is greatly
appreciated and I always pass them on to the other
students in class. And I print out some of them for
others to read specially artimator because know body
believes the stuff he said. And it's kinds hard to
explain some of the statements he make so I just print
them and post them, they always get a laugh.

I had this problem (wheel out of level) when I started out and it affected
my throwing in the ways that you mention. I used shims under the legs to
bring the wheel to level. Maybe a more experienced potter could somehow
compensate - as soon as the wheel was leveled, those particular problems
evaporated.
Places where you might find lessons/ studio time:
cummunity college
Ceramics supply store (some have studios attached)
community centers
local potters
Find out if there is a potter's guild in the area. They would be a great
source of information.
