kiln convertion question

I just got a 30 cu. ft electric L&L the bricks for the most part are in
good condition but all the elements are shot and no firing control
computer. What I want to do is convert it into a down draft gas kiln.
What I want to do is build a second brick wall about six inches out around
the outside of the kiln and fill it with something? What should that
something be? The reason I want to do this is because I want to go to cone6
on a regular basis and I'm not sure the current bricks will retain the heat
that well. I'm new at this game so if anyone can help I would really
appreciate it.

Thanks
James, in Annapolis

Why downdraft? Sure, it's more efficient for fuel consumption,
but you'll have to do a lot more modification. Why not go for
updraft?

I'd wrap it in fiber, and extend the steel jacket as needed.
Someone (Jonathan?) posted some great pictures of how to do
this.

Personally, if I got a 30 cu.ft. electric kiln with nothing
wrong but the elements, I'd spring for new elements! Big
used electric kilns are scarce; too precious to use just as
a pile of IFB.

Email me and let me know what model it is. I'll tell if it practical to
recondition it.
