Hi.
What I have been doing for many, many years kinda' is combining some
thoughts already mentioned here from both Vince and Michael. As Vince
said, Greenpatch 421 is WONDERFUL stuff. Lots of uses. Ceramic fiber ha=
s
the wonderful ability to fill voids in fired refractories and not shrink
much....like most mortars, plastic refractories, and clay type patched do=
. =
If you combine the two materials, you get patches that are really
effective and long lasting.
Carefully, take some NEW (not used) fiber of the appropriate use rating a=
nd
immediately wet it with water to control the dusting. With a razor knif=
e,
cut the fiber into tiny strips appropriate to the size repair you need to=
make. Soak it with some Greenpatch 421. Using a small putty knife or
pallate knife work it deep into the crack you need to patch. Repeat
stuffing the fiber into the hole until it is level with the refractory
surface which you are patching. Smooth off the surface in an appropriate=
manner for work done by a craftsperson..... and fire. Greenpatch 421 has=
both heat setting and air setting porperties, so it works for either hot
face or cold face repairs.
I have also used ITC100 HT for this use on hot face surfaces.... and it
seems to work very well also. It's not really cost effective for cold fa=
ce
repairs..... too expensive....Greenpatch 421 is less expensive in that
application.
Oh yeah......... the discalimer......
Whenever using refractory ceramic fiber (RCF)...... take appropriate safe=
ty
precautions.... and that means REALLY take them....... very nasty stuff t=
o
breathe. Wear some gloves.... it often can have tiny teeny sharp "spikes=
"
that get into your skin like metal splinters. And remember that used
fiber is usually even more hazardous than the new stuff.... since it
develops more respirable microcrystaline free silica.
Best,
..............................john
