About a year ago when I switched from cone 10 to cone 6, I left behind =
two fake ash glazes that I just loved. I tried modifying them and even =
asked for help here on the listserve but they were just never =
satisfactory. One of my glazes was a copper green and the other a nice =
iron. Does anyone have a good fake ash at cone 6 oxidation that they =
would share?

Dear Tom,
There you are Doctor, I did not see you because you changed your email name.

From Edouard Bastarache I have the following
called Drabble:

50 Hardwood Ash, wash 5 times
20 3134
15 Custerspar
15 EPK

18 Utrox
8 RIO

I did not wash the ash and it ran like crazy. Otherwise it looked ash like.

I also tested it like this. Cannot remember where I saw this, but
undoubtedly Clayart.
50 washed hardwood ash
15 Custerspar
20 Frit 3134

also runny.
regards from Alisa in Denmark
ADD
2 Bentonite
10 Zircocpax

Tom: If you want actual ash glazes at cone 6, the clayart archives have
several good ones. I think that there are two fake ash glazes there as well.

I've been working on a commission for a large platter these past few weeks and have had to experiment with a variety of cone 6 glazes to achieve the "earthy" tones my customer wanted and at the last minute I latched onto something that works really well for me, I just had to share this with all the cone 6 firers out there.

Basically all it is is a clear gloss base glaze I found in a glaze recipe book(sorry can't recall which one), I knew this glaze to be good because I had already test fired it some time back so when I was attempting to do some wood ash on my platters I eventually thought of just mixing some wood ash into it and seeing what happened, the results were far better than I could have even hoped for ! Really.

My ash was just straight from a pellet stove(hardwood ash) that I was thankfully lax in cleaning, so it wasn't washed or anything just scooped into a slip trail bottle about half full of clear glaze. I estimate I put in about 20 to 30 % but work with it, see what works for you. I used the slip trail bottle to squirt it on but I think it'd be even better if you sprayed it on.

The only adjustment I have noticed is I probably applied a bit too much and it tended to puddle just a bit at the bottom of my platters but a simple bit of experience with how much you need to apply would fix that. The result of this mixed clear gloss/ash was really nice rivulets of ash running down the sides! And this at cone 6, I wouldn't have believed it possible but it really looks like a cone 10 melt.

If your interested in the ash look on your work i recommend this glaze with ash. Be sure to apply it up high on the pot so it can have some space to run.

Clear Gloss:

Gerstley Borate - 50
Silica - 32
Kaolin - 16
Whiting - 2
Bentonite - 1 (could be 2)

Add:
CMC - 1 Teaspoon

Good luck and try it!

Tracy
