Okay... I should have known that everyone is going to have a different
opinion. :::grin::: Thank you Lois for your input and giving me hope once
again with trying the Hydro Bats. :-)

Has anyone invested in Hydro bats? I read that they
made from some sort of cement and are much stronger
than plaster bats with the same water absorption rate.
Also they have holes for the bat pins.
I would appreciate input regarding these bats.
Thanks
Charan

I love mine. I ordered six to try them out and have been extremely pleased.
They seem to be strong a bit heavy if carrying more than a few at a time but
good enough that I am about to place another order.

I also have been looking into these bats. What about when you use a wooden
tool to take excess from the bottom of a pot. Is it likely you will
introduce bat material into the clay scraps?

My husband has a few. He has mixed feelings about them. Most of them
aren't symetrical, there are high spots as it revolves. They aren't
completely level and they move around a little on the wheelhead. You can
deal with it, but... But they are rigid, which is good, and they do release
well, if they aren't too dry and they aren't too wet. He says he hasn't
really had a problem with wooden tools scraping up plaster. He suggests
just getting a couple and trying them and see what you think. No bat is
perfect, they all have their pros and cons.

I love mine, and about to order more. They are nice and level, absorb
water at just the right rate (for me) and don't wobble at all. Oh,
and I find them to be reasonably priced, too.

Oh man... I'm so sorry to hear this. I saw them at the last two NCECA
conferences and was thinking that they might be the perfect bat for me...
once I got the money to buy them. I really like the idea of them releasing so
well. Oh well... maybe I'll try a few like you suggested just to see for
myself.

I have been using Creative Industries plastic bats, and although they are
symmetrical, and nice and flat, and they generally fit fairly snug (unless
I'm centering a lot of clay they sometimes get a slight wobble)... they don't
release worth a damn.

I've never really enjoyed messing with plaster bats much. Always avoided
them... though I've always envied the way they release.

Best wishes,

Ken

Dear Ken,
I bought some, and love them, and so do a number of others in our potters'
guild who have tried mine. In fact, we are working up to a big group
order. We found them to be flat and unwobbly. And of course they
release!! I may be mistaken but I seem to remember Vince Pitelka getting
some last year and really singing their praises.

I love mine, and wish I had more (and will soon!) I
prefer them over plaster.

I usually throw late in the evening, and i throw with
too much water.... I usually put a cardboard box over
top of the piece (instead of plastic) and the piece is
usually ready to pop off before I leave for school.
If it's a larger piece it's usually ready to pop off
right after school.

Brac kers (brackers.com) just sent out their spring
sale flyer, and they have them on sale right now!

(spring fever has hit! 78 yesterday, with 35-40 mile
an hour winds. the kids want to take class outside,
and so do I!)
