pork kilns in alaska

I was catching up on the news tonight and there was a story on pork
barrell spending by our wonderful federal government. What caught
my eye was "$2,000,000 for pottery kilns in Alaska.
My primary question is; How the hell did you Alaskans pull that one
off?
Since there can't be all that many potters in Alaska, each potter
should get a very nice double car kiln in the 100 foot size.
Or is all this money going to a couple of businesses that gave large
campain contributions to a certain senator?
I would really be interested to know who gets the kilns.
Two million bucks, wow, that could build lots of kilns.

Now, this one REALLY interests me! Two million dollars would fire just
about all of Alaska, except possibly Prudhoe Bay. Help me do a little quick
math here.

A really good Bailey downdraft car kiln costs about $25,000, installed,
levelled, certified, and exhaust hood put in. These kilns, along with fuel
sources would have to be installed inside buildings, as the outside would be
far too cold for mst of the year. So, no sheds or separate buildings
required. Let's be real generous and add another $25,000 for LPG or natural
gas tanks, lines, pressure regulators, and certifications. (I know, it's a
stretch, but things are expensive these days!)

OK. That comes to $50,000 for a gas fired kiln, ready for use. Two million
dollars would buy...

Forty kilns!

Are there THAT many potters in Alaska who get subsidies from the Gummint?
The universities don't get them, that's for sure!

This bears closer examination.

What is the source of the article, Klyf? Enquiring minds want to know...

Klyf: This sort of thing is traceable, researchable, whatever, but we need
more info. Where did you read, hear, or see this info? It sounds a bit
preposterous but, hey, who knows? This information should be part of the
government record somewhere. That is if the Freedom of Information Act is
still in one piece. Alaska has a couple of powerful senators.

Tim,
This was on CNN headline news, last night around 6pm. They were
reading off a list of insane spending on pork projects as this years
pork was more than 20 billion bucks, the largest ever. The two million
for pottery kilns in Alaska was in the middle of the list. I saw it again
early this morning on another CNN newscast.

Hey, where do I sign up for a free kiln??? HAHA!
Are you sure it said 'pottery kilns', not wood-drying kilns? This sounds
very strange, indeed.
