I suffer from lower back problems mostly due to years of manual labor
while in school and many years teaching/studio maintenance/equipment
repair and simply moving stuff around the studio - the usual things.
When I'm involved in a session (hours) of throwing, I put all of my
wedged clay on a table out of my reach sitting at the wheel. After
each piece is completed, I must stand up and walk over to the table
for the next lump of clay. This gives me the chance to stretch and
change position often resulting in very little or no back pain after
hours of work.
Of course all the pain comes after my wife decides to redecorate and
has me rearrange all the furniture.

I don't throw a lot anymore. Used to use a home made wheel with the
wheel head between my legs and my knees raised. 10 years ago I put a
Brent up on concrete blocks. I can stand and throw for long periods
with no problem.
John Glick did an article in CM years ago about a padded back rest
that he leans against while throwing standing up.
