>>So rather than decry the ugliness and meaninglessness of =
postmodernism,
understand that this is just one more stage in the continual dialectic =
of
art, and work to make original beauty that corresponds to your own
conception of what beauty is.<<

Hi Martin,
I rather enjoyed this post and would like to add,
That yes beauty is in the eye of the beholder
and relative to the capacity and depth of said beholder...
One who has not sampled and explored with passion
an art or conceptual idea does not bring much insight
into his perception and sharing of the experience.
Art for me has a deep relation to the human figure...
as this "archetype" or basic factor in our conditioning
has such an incredibly firm grip on our consciousness so
that any perception will be absolutely influenced by its existence.
(At least while contemplating ..art/architecture/nature etc.)
Therefore it is the very basis of our concept of proportion and balance.
Though as I consider it... crystalline structures,
molecular constructs, fractal patterns, the golden mean etc=20
could and do provide models for building systems of design=20
and are expressions of beauty and precision..
From the beginning of creation existence has been spinning beautiful =
patterns.
But in a primitive sense the first born is certainly the human form.
(Considering embryonic development I find myself slipping
back further into the evolutionary chain..salt water creature ; )
Beauty, I believe, in utter essence has a lot to do with efficiency ..
or economy of line, movement, energy dynamics etc.
and "ugliness" can be said to have the opposite attributes
sloppiness, waste, pointlessness, imbalance etc.
Not that it can't be appreciated for these qualities.
Art can be shocking ,horrific, funny, a catalyst of thought
and all that, but beauty....
It is something else, an essence that transcends these
more advanced "psychological" centers of development.
A moment of grace..a shiver up the spine..... simple recognition!
A brief consideration of evolution on a material and biological level,
we can see how forms are developed out of efficiency and energy =
economics.
Though one could say that there is certainly some terrifying =
manifestations
that out of fear and ignorance are perceived as ugly etc..
but the true eye sees beyond the minds inability to break through its =
own barriers.
The danger of a shark, the inherent fear of a snake or spider ,=20
the deadliness of the scorpion...
The irritation of a mosquito, all that clouds our perception of form.
The fear of the unkown, fear of losing ones sanity...
barriers in exchange for security.
Beauty is found in all that it creates...
The pattern of water through rocks, flame and smoke from a fire,
Leaves on a tree blowing in the wind... and one floats adrift.
No wonder "artists" down the ages have looked into nature for =
inspiration
to realize the highest development of their abilities and the expression =
of
a beauty that "vibrates" with human beings from all cultures and times
with similar concerns and values.
Otherwise.. =20
I believe in arts therapeutic value,
hence alot of the cathartic emanations=20
coming from the angst of the suffering "artist"
who knows only the discontent
and anger of being an illegitimate child...
who has not found his home and place.
Post modernism "ugliness" simply reflects
the inability of the of the modern day
consumerism mentality to satisfy..
along with the human capacity
to exploit and to be exploited.
No wonder we see so much puke
in our life...we are just fed up !
materialism in the crudest sense
just won't do !
enough of the rant..
Bruce
ps. the more I think of it=20
the only ugliness I see
around me is man made
and mostly on a psychological level
or by a manipulating motive
for personal gain...
and pain.
