kiln wash on new shelves

updated tue 16 apr 02

OK I'm a newby. Purchased my first kiln, painted my new shelves with
commercial kiln wash as recommended and they were fine until my first
cone 6 firing. Then I got a few glazes spots on them and some crazing
of the wash. So I sanded off the glaze and loose wash with my new
silicon carbide block and recoated the shelves. But as the new coat
dried, it lifted the old coat underneath like peeling paint. So I
sanded and tried again...and again, with the same results. Called the
supplier and they said I have to remove ALL the old kiln wash. Is this
true? And if so, is there an easy way to do that? Any suggestions?

With some kiln wash formulations, you can patch the bare spot
rather than having to remove all the old kiln wash.
