Hi-
Our guild has a soda kiln that needs a new damper. It was suggested that we
use a mullite shelf for this. Does anyone have an opinion on this? Also,
where can we buy them?
Thanks from a lurker-

Dear Sara of the Greater Lansing Potters' Guild in Michigan.
This is just an opinion since I do not Know the actual composition of =
your Mullite Plate.
I think it will be OK provided you do not get any chilling of the plate =
as you draw it out.
The reason I say that is because Sodium carbonate initiates the glaze =
reaction with free silica in your clay and a Mullite shelf should not =
contain any free silica.=20
However, my experience is that a mullite plate will crack at some time, =
usually sooner than later, because one part chills and imposes a strain =
line due to the sudden contraction.
Why not use a tile of Steel Tread Plate cut to size by a local metal =
smith. I solved the problem by using bricks. Or you could use a passive =
damper.
