In case anyone missed it, I have the same opinion about the small North Star
extruder. I'm just not happy with it. Though I do like the slab roller built
by North Star that I own.

I use my small North Star extruder all the time, mostly for coils and
handles. The
only time I have noticed the tearing is if I have some dry clay attached to
the
barrel somewhere. I use a heavily grogged clay and get great coils. I do not
use
overly soft clay, just my usual. I am quite happy with the extruder and
would
recommend it, unless you are looking to use it for larger projects then you
would
want to look at a larger extruder.

I have a Northstar and use one at school... I would NOT buy another
one.!!!.
The last one i bought for school is a Bailey..and i believe it is far
superior to the North Star.. You can make dies from metal, wood, or
plastic... it holds a lot more clay and it extrudes smoothly.. Have not had
any tearing of clay yet .. hard or soft. !

Also, several years ago North Star produced some dies that were cut
"off-center" and would not extrude correctly.. To their credit, they did
send me new dies..free of charge--. However, some dealers still have some
of the old defective dies in stock..I have purchased several dies for school
that are the old defective design. And.. North Star has not answered my
Emails asking for replacement..I has sent several emails asking for
direction
for return and/or replacement.. They ignore my request.
