potters wheel evaluation invitation !!!!

updated wed 15 may 02

Ceramic Design Group on mon 15 apr 02

We have been asked by Pottery Making Illustrated to prepare a review of the
market place of electric potter's wheels. (non-flywheel type)

Ceramic Design Group will host a "Potter's Wheel Evaluation Event" in
Steamboat Springs Colorado on May 18 and 19 2002.

The evaluation will also be a part of an Empty Bowls Project to benefit the
Routt Country "Lift Up" food bank program in our area.

The major wheel manufacturers have graciously agreed to send us a selection
of their products: Amaco/Brent, Axner, Bailey, Bluebird/Soldner, Kemper,
Laguna, Shimpo, Thomas Stuart, Creative Industries, Max, and Lockerbie. We
expect to have upwards of 20 state of the art electric wheels at our
facility for you to evaluate.

This is an open invitation for potters in the Western States or for that
matter, from anywhere else to come to Steamboat Springs, high in the
Rockies, for the weekend. Ski season is over. The weather is beautiful. We
have some discount rates for lodging. Biking and hiking season is here! A
pot luck dinner will be provided on Saturday nite and we plan to show slides
of participants work, so bring some slides. Libations provided. A fun time
will be had! ( It is also rumored that my extensive X-rated slide show of
Erotic Peruvian Pottery may also be presented!)

The results of the input from this weekend will be published in an upcoming
"Potters Guide" by Pottery Making Illustrated (ACERS). We hosted a similar,
very successful event last fall for a slab roller evaluation that was
published in the last" Potter's Guide."

If you would like to join us, please post me your snail mail address and I
will make sure you get a personal invitation with all the necessary
information. So please mark these dates on your calendar and join us for a
weekend of fun, throwing, trimming, networking, conversation, talking shop,
and meeting and greeting other potters.

Best

As a Wheel'r Dealer and ex-potter i think this is a great idea. Every day
i talk to anxious beginners anguishing over which wheel to buy.

Also a Brent or CI wheel of today is not the same as 10 years ago,,,,,,

Dear Jonathan.

Sounds a worth while project.

I would like to make one comment. I hope each wheel will have a
sympathetic demonstrator, because no wheel is perfect for any body when it
arrives . My wheel is set to go quite slowly relative to the speed it can g=
o
the wheel is easier to control and no sudden 'wheelies' if my foot slips.

last year I was at a collage where there seemed to be very little
throwing done and the only student there who was keen to learn was having a
difficult time . They had no technician at the time ad the wheels were set
too fast and jolty for even me to manage. The tutor was used to wheels
running like that. They would have suited his methods of production but for
students they were unnecessarily fast with a stiff speed controler that
needed setting up to give a smoother run.

when my new wheel arrived I was very disappointed until I discovered
that it had the potentiality for fine tuning where as an other wheel could
have had a better initial impression but could not be adjusted for 'taste'.

i am about to buy a new wheel and was all set to go
for the bailey with leg extensions and extended work
table to throw in standing position. i have been
looking at the adds for the new axner wheel and now am
not sure which one to buy.

i had been using a brent kick wheel and am now using a
borrowed brent C electric. i really do not care for
the brent splash pan, expecially when using the giffen
grip. ( most trimming end up on the floor)

if anyone is going to the evaluation in steamboat
springs and would not mind comparing these two wheels
i would greatly appreciate it. i don't think i can
wait till the publication comes out as i will have to
return the brent soon. i sure wish i could get there
myself - but not this year. thank you

I really like my new Bailey now three years old. There was a problem with
the fly
wheel slipping but they sent a new set screw and it is fine. The max. speed
is not
as fast as Brents or Shimpos but it is fast enough. I like it. The splash
pan has
a drian in it and cleans up very easily. I had a Stewart motorized kick
wheel
which was a very good wheel. I changed because of my new dog not because of
the
wheel.
My little dog follows me every where and I was afraid she would get mushed
in the
fly wheel. The stewart is a very good wheel if you like using a kick wheel
with
your feet for reverse or maneuver ability.
My co-op partner has a creative industires wheel and another has a
Lockerbie. Both
are excellent wheels.
Go test drive some wheels in your area before purchasing. I think speed is
another
consideration as well as reaction to controls.
Have fun shopping around.

This appears to be well on its way to becoming quite the event. I'm
posting it again if there is anyone else who might like to join us. If you
are thinking of buying a wheel, this is the place to be to try them all an=
d
find out which wheel is best for you.
