I made a real mistake in wording a comment concerning shinos....I, in no way
whatever, meant to imply that shinos were substandard...I misunderstood the
whole thing....I thought that, if they were refired in an oxidation bisque,
they were more fragile than if they had been fired only in high fire
reduction and allowed a soaking period. I now think that I understand the
thing.....after realizing what I wrote....looking at those beautiful shino
glazes that I scored at NCECA and on my posters , and wanting to do the
same, I hardly would mean to demean them....now, if the glaze is as durable
as it is going to get after a little interlude in a bisque kiln, as I think
that is what you are saying, then I'm straight on the whole thing and at
cone 6 they look very nice to me and I like my Tom Buck revised versions.
They are lusterous and pretty...but I please, please did not mean to start
anything about the quality of shinos.....Melinda

Dear Melinda;

Sorry this thread got so convoluted.......either a refire in
oxidation, or a soak in oxidation during the cooling. Not much
difference in my experience. Only thing improved is the depth of
color. Durability depends upon the Al/Si ratio and the fluxes used.
Mine are pretty tough.....for shinos. Some have used this thin color
to advantage by lightly sandblasting the surface to get white next
to red color. No apology required...........and loved the glaze
pencil post.

Cheers, Hank
