Not a bad portable demo wheel, or for fooling around on. Would not want
to make anything over a couple of pounds on one on a regular basis.
Would not want to make a lot of pots at one time on one.

During Nceca 2000 I sat and watched Takashi Nagazato's apprentance and then
daughter throw hundereds of pieces off the hump on an Axner. Doug Casebeer
said that it was a wonderful alternative to the Korean wheels that cost SO
much more (not including shipping of course.) Nagazato-san used his Korean
wheel he had shipped from Japan though. Never tried the Axner, but I would
imagine it would be great for thowing off the hump but exhausting to throw
large pieces on.

It's called a York kickwheel and I have had one for several years. It is
wonderful for demonstrations. I have taken it to craft sales and
demonstrations everywhere. Most recently, I did a demo for several classes
of kindergarteners. It was the last day of my classes with them, so I
passed
out the kids pieces and gathered them round for a demo. It's as good as a
magic show. I am a 39 yro female and I have no problem swinging it over my
shoulder and carrying it up several flights of stairs. However, it is not a
wheel to produce work on. I make cups, or small bowls with it. It is too
short to kick comfortably, and it is not heavy enough to spin hard enough to
make large pieces. It is advertised that you can make larger pieces, and
you
probably could make somewhat larger pieces, but that doesn't mean you would
want to. Too much work. As far as I'm concerned, its good for demos and as
a banding wheel in between. It is also great for little kids to play making
little pots. If you are looking for a cheap wheel to "really" make pots,
get
one of these new electric ones at Axner for around $500 or the Clayboss on
ebay for just under $500, or a good kick wheel for around $450. Good luck!
