was: electric kiln elements for hi temp

Hello Erik:

As far as lower resistance values making the element fire hotter hotter,
that is how things work. I wasn't sure but I received an email from Tom
Buck and he expained the principle very well with some bits of electrical
theory to make it all clear.

I've never had to compare element life with the sort of setup you now have
in your kiln. What I've found is that the heavier guage elements, 13 & 14
guage, will last a lot longer than lighter guage elements. I had a guy
near me wind coils out of Hoskins High Fire Element wire, which he thought
was a lot better than Kanthal A-1, and then I'd cut them to the proper
length for the correct resistance value, stretch, and install. Now I only
fire bisque loads in the electrics so I just buy elements from Skutt when I
need to change them. It's not that often now!
