Michael McDowell gave Kayo and I an old, clapped out fiber propane raku kiln
about
4 years ago. Keeping it alive has been a personal challenge, but its the
only kiln
I have here so far at Arkysanto, so it does everything - bisque, ^6
reduction, ^06
LOL decorated bisque kewpie dolls, raku, etc. Now coated with ITC 100 over
Greenpatch 421 over ITC100 over 'Sairset over the fiber - just sticking it
together
with whatever's handy when it gets flaky, it works just fine.

The problem with 'gas' is that everyone automatically associates 'reduction'
with
'gas'. Just open up the damper and the primary air, no back pressure, no
flames
coming out the peeps, in other words 'gas oxidation' firing and bisqueing
and
low-fire Duncan and Amaco stuff come out just like an electric kiln. And for
you
big sculpture types that use low-fire commercial colors, this solves the
'work too
big for the kiln' problem - just stack up the bricks and use a raku burner,
in 'gas
oxidation' mode. Works fine.
