Hi Kats,
I got a gas kiln about a year and a half ago. Hooked it all up, I've got a
200 gallon propane tank so there's no switching for me. When I laid down on
that concrete to light it many thoughts raced through my head. My hair gone
being one of the first.
A gas kiln should scare you, makes you respect it. I assume you must close
off valves when you change the bottle. Just make sure you always do it.
Your first firings will be timid, mine were. Barely reduced the thing, fire
shoots out the top now.
You haven't bitten off more then you can chew, just starting something
different. Takes getting use to, watch it like a hawk at first. See what
it does, don't fuss over it after you figure it out. Take notes so you
don't forget, after a while you won't need them but they help at first.
I think it's wonderful that you jumped in feet first, just be cautious. And
remember, if there is a problem with the kiln during firing and you don't
feel comfortable shut it down. It's that simple.
Oh, and be careful looking in the spy hole, lit my hat on fire once because
the wind changed direction and I was a bit slow looking at the cones.

wearing that hat right now, my husband thinks I should throw it away, no
way, it's my lucky hat, took a bullet for me = )
