pot packing, an art

I hate to pack and ship. Time consuming and costly just to start with. Then
only to find out that something arrived broken. If and when I absolutely
have to ship now, I double box. Use plenty of bubble wrap and Styrofoam
peanuts. Isolate the piece so that it is surrounded by plenty of good
packing. Then box it again. I haven't had many things broken over the years
having learned to pack my pottery carefully. I can't believe that so much
clay stuff shipped to the Cone Box show got trashed. My two pieces got there
and back just fine. (Just wished that they would have gotten accepted!)
Packing pots is an art into itself.
I have noticed too that people believe that when they park their car only
for a few minutes in a no parking zone, put their car's flashers on,
thinking that it will keep them from getting a parking ticket while they
dash into a store. Bang! A parking ticket every time! Flashers just make
their car more easily spotted by the patrol officer. As so some people
believe if they print in big letters, "FRAGILE" on the package that someone
will take extra care with it in handling. When shippers see FRAGILE marked
on the package, they just throw the package across the room under-handed
instead of over-handed. Pack like you mean it!
Once I took a box to UPS that I had marked FRAGILE. The counter person
whipped out a big black marker and X'ed over it. "We don't have a stinking
"fragile program" she said and tossed it over her shoulder onto a conveyor
belt where it disappeared into a dark hole in the wall.
I hate to pack and ship!

I was in Staples last week looking for some office supplies when I saw
reasonably priced inflatable plastic pillows; one type [more expensive] had
a hollow center which allowed one to place varying sized pieces of pottery
before inflation. Since I don't ship, I was unaware that these items
existed. I did buy 2 6-packs of the solid inflatable pillow [inflate and
deflate with a straw] for moving pottery around to local gallaries. If you
don't know about these items, I would suggest you take a look.

I have used new Huggies PullUps training pants for toddlers to pack my pots
to travel to shows since someone left a pack of them at my house years
ago.....they are fast and easy and the elastic hugs the pot and they come in
sizes and the leg openings work for teapot handles and spouts. I even pack
cannisters with the lids on and haven't lost one due to chips. Bowls fit
inside one another so I only use one for every other bowl. I use worn socks
for small stuff. I cushion each plastic box with a cut-to-fit sheet of
mattress foam.

Lexxey...all my stuff is at: http://www.flummoxed.org/lexxey/index.htm
