shino flaking

In our last firing at school we experienced problems with the shino
flaking off in areas--the surface appears very glassy with small
cracks that chip off when you run your fingernail across it. In the
past I have had very good luck with this particular shino recipe and
now all of sudden this happens. Any suggestions as to what might be
occuring?

Hello,

What percentage of melter do you have in your claybody or is it the same
body you used before? I have had shino flake off when there wasn't enough
feldspar. You want 10-15% feldspar in your body on average. This can also
depend on how long your firing was and how you fired, but more than likely a
clay glaze interface problem. Also, if you are bisquing, what are you
bisquing to? If you tell me your shino recipe I maybe able to make some
recommendations. If you have any pics of the shivering pieces, I would be
curious to see them.

Thank you!

Patrice,
Howdy! I have this problem happen occationally. What is your
percentage of soda ash? Had a consultation with my shivering pieces a
couple weeks ago. The shivering was worse where the carbon trap was best.
I don't have a suggestion as to how to fix this except lowering your soda
ash a bit which I've done and haven't had a problem (fingers crossed) yet.
