Hi Carolynn,
If you can't find or don't like a fine grog consider
mullite. You could try a combination of a little fine
mesh mullite and maybe some fine sand. Molochite is
mullite and amorphous silica glass. Except that
molochite has no crystalline silica, messing around
with a little fine mullite and other odds and ends may
make a fine substitute for the special thermal shock
capabilities of your current body.
Some fine sand alone could be sufficient, though it
would not have the thermal shock resistance or low
expansion of molochite, mullite, or certain grogs. If
your glazes are all geared toward this molochite body,
you may want to try a few different grogs, sand,
combinations, etc. You'd be more likely to find a body
that works well with your existing stable of glazes.
I'd be curious about what you discover. Interesting
post.
Hope this helps.
