Hey all, while busily making glazes this weekend, I
accidently added zircopax into a recipe instead of tin
oxide. I know they're both opacifiers, but I can't
find in books or in the archives, whether or not I can
use the same amount for the same outcome. I can always
add more of the other ingredients to compensate, or
more zircopax, but if anyone knows the correct ratio,
it would be appreciated.
Also, I'm making a copper red that calls for frit
3124. I have none. My friends have none, and I don't
want to wait a week for it to arrive (whoever said
that pottery is a patience builder?). I've been told
by a local potter that I can substitute gerstley
borate and a little soda ash, but I was under the
impression that it might affect the color adversely.
Anyone know this? I'm making vats of most glazes, as I
don't have an airgun, and I want to fill the kiln, for
better or for worse, so it isn't like these are little
miniscule testing batches. They are, however, all
tried and true glazes that have always worked,
regardless of differences in ingredients, so I'm not
too concerned. Anyway, any advice out there would be
great. Thanks, Jules

It seems all accidents are experiments in disguise. It'll be interesting to
see what happens. I don't know that I would sacrifice a whole "vat" of
glaze to an experiment though.
