I'm having trouble with warping. My pots and plates are all coming out fine
but I've been doing longer taller pieces like a modern tall bird and a tall
and thin sconce and they are warping. With the candle holder the warping
was
sideways although I stood the piece in the kiln and the swan -well what a
sight- head and tail are nnow one. The head bent backwards until it met the
tail. I also tried putting the pieces sideways but in the case of a
standing
holder it's a long piece that stands being held by a ball when I put it
sidewayss the ball ended on one side instead of the middle. The putting
pieces on their side works with a couple but not all. The porcelain I'm
using looks to be pretty good (Aspen Porcelain).I'm wondering is there any
special prop that one can use to avoid this at cone 6- . I'm only bisqueing
at 6 and the rest is low fire glazing. Thanks for your input - mercy

Mercy, I did not follow your treat perfectly well, but from what I picked
up,
it sounds to me that you either have to change your clay or change your
style. Porcelain is a very complex clay to fire in most cases, since you
deal
with not much support ( grog and fireclay) in the body itself. If it reach a
vitrifying temperature it will easily distort if there are not a very strong
balance between all parts of a piece. For instance: If you make a cup and
the
handle is a bit too heavy, it will pull a perfectly formed cup skew. Maybe
you need to change to a porcelanious stoneware that will still give you some
of the effect of porcelain, but help you to do sculpture with it. You can
also
add grog to your clay and maybe fire to a lower temperature. I hope I did
understand your question to some extend so that this can help you.
Take care.
Antoinette.

I am sorry to say, you are simply expecting too much of your clay! You
have a couple of options. Either simplify your figures a great deal or
chose a different clay body.
