elements in kiln turning on and off! need help!!!

Hi Again! I'm hoping you guys have a clue to my kiln dilemma. My kiln is
underfiring and cones seem untouched. So far after all my testing I've
concluded that it's not the cones cause I bought new boxes and retested.
Also
I am getting a consistent 240 electricity cause I measured at all the
different stages. given these facts I turned the kiln on to see what
happened when the kiln was on and this is what is happening. The three
sections turn on but they do not stay on indefinitely. One minute there all
on and the next minute the top section goes off oor the bottom goes off and
this continues which I know is why my cone six is not bending. Can anyone
tell me if they've had this before and what they've done? I always thought
that if the elements turn on at all then they are fine. So I guess it's in
the box but WHAT? thanks again-Mercy

Type of kiln?
Switch or controller controlled?
How old are the elements (How many firings to what temperature?)?

Sorry that I wasn't specific- I start writing and forget you guys are not
mind readers. The kiln is an Energy saver Duncan, with kiln sitter and
it's
manual or automatic. Inside dimensions are 23 x 29 and firing s I'm not sure
cause I just bought recently used(Iwwas told that it had barely been fired
but I don't know for sure). I have fired it 5 times and the first was 04
bisque and the second was 6(porcelain is what I'm working on) and it worked
fine. then the other firings have not worked at the same cones and as
explained in the other email the cones are not even bending a little and
thoses elements are not staying on all the time. Something new that I just
saw is that that click that the kiln gives when the elements are heating
well
it never stops clicking and when I looked into the box I saw a spark when it
clicks - is that normal? thanks again-Mercy

Does your kiln have infinite switches,
or the low-med-hi sort?

Mercy's question is asked fairly often: why do the elements not
stay on?

Your kiln is probably using either infinite control switches, or a
digital controller. In either case, it is normal for the elements
to cycle on and off in the early stages of firing. With each cycle,
you will hear a clicking noise.

The first thing I would try is a higher heat setting on infinite
control switches, or faster firing cycle on a digital controller.

When the infinite control switches are turned to the high position,
the elements will stop cycling. At that point, the kiln is firing
at full power. On a digital kiln, you will no longer hear a
clicking noise when the elements are staying on rather than
cycling.

It is possible that the infinite control switch pointer is on the
wrong setting. Though it points to high, it may be on a lower
setting. This can happen on a Duncan kiln that has had a switch
replacement.

With infinite switches(not low/med/high but the ones with a
bunch of numbers) they do go on and off at all stages but high,
when they should stay on...Do you have infinite switches?

Tom You said reed switches. What is that-a brand? Thanks, Mercy / Tried
your email directly but it came back as wrong address twice.

Hi- I opened the box and it does say that it has infinite switches. I know
some of you asked but can somebody tell me what thaat means? Anyways I'm
testing every switch with my multimeter and no signs of any trouble there
yet. thank you and any info will be so appreciated. Mercy
