The hydroponic medium with which I'm familiar is made up of
little round beads about 5/16" in diameter and made of a red
and very porous material. If one hits the floor and gets stepped
on, it's toast... well, actually, it's dust. Almost the consistency of
lava rock. Very light.

The beads are most likely tumbled after they're fired. Personally, I =
don't think it's necessary for anything other than aesthetics. Plants =
grow in rocky, jagged media all the time in nature. Many even require =
it. Nothing's much more jagged and sharp than lava, but plants thrive in =
it..=20
I'd just go for it and extrude away to my heart's ( and plants ) =
content.
