Hello all,

I am seriously interested in getting a clay group together in this area,
and don't know the first thing about how to do it. If anybody has any
advice, I'd like to hear it. I don't even know the difference between a
Club, League, Guild, and Association, so we're starting from zero. I
sort of envision it as a group that gets together once a month or every
other month and shares stories, information, ideas, inspiration and
problem-solving. Maybe we could have group pit fires or raku, or
something once in a while. Maybe workshops and/or demonstrations. I'd
like to see it grow into something that will help develop and promote
ceramic arts in this area, and benefit everybody involved.

The biggest problem that I can see is that there may not be enough
ceramic artists (potters, tile makers, sculptors, etc) in this area to
make it work. I hope there are.

So, if there are any clay artists out there in Southeast Kansas,
Southwest Missouri, Northeast Oklahoma, or maybe even Northwest
Arkansas, please contact me off list and let me know if that is
something you would like to be involved in. I'll put together a mailing
list and see what we can do.

(I'm changing from Roadrunner to Cox Cable this month, so here are two
e-mail addresses. Cox is the newest one and the other is good till the
end of June. I'll check them both.)

Thanks,

Sylvia Shirley

Hi Sylvia,

Our own guild got started about 2 years ago. We now have 110 members,
and run regular meetings, workshops, sales, group firings and other
events. So I certainly encourage you to "go for it!" I will send you some
more detailed info off-line.

In the mean time, we've been trying to coordinate with other groups, and
learn from them. We've set up a "guilds working together" web page
at http://www.ovcag.org/guilds/ - among other things, you'll find a
discussion board, and a directory of other groups (we know of about
fifty). We've also proposed a session on guilds for NCECA 2003 in
San Diego... waiting to hear back on our proposal!

Best of luck!

Bob
