For 30+ years I have fired a jillion electric kilns on great covered
ramadas,
quite safe from rain and other elements. Usually 7' walls on all sides with
4' of open space above that. High pitched roof set on columns spaced 10'
apart. 6' double gate at doorway. Lots of air, lots of circulation in this
huge space. By the way it was just an area for kilns, not a classroom space.
Anyway, I have never paid attention to what is emitted during firings
because
once loaded and on, no one was around the kilns until it was time to load
and
unload again. And I knew there were fumes.
I am in a space now and the kilns are in a room with no ventilation,
sometimes during an entire firing. So, when you go into the room, there is a
greenish hazy cloud that makes one, er, vomit and get a tremendous headache
almost immediately. Now, I am smart enough to know this is bad juju, but I
still have to go into the room to get the windows open. I hold my breath,
wear a mask, etc........
I have told the people in power that this stuff is poisonous, against some
kind of code, makes me sick, they could get sued.........So, after 5 months
and one day they are finally mumbling, exhaust fan. Of course, I want an
exhaust system, but I need to know what I am actually breathing. What is the
juju? All of my reference books are back home and I was told this morning I
could make a presentation to the Board Monday night, yep two days from now.
I
am starting here to see if I can get a bit of info from you tech gurus!
Thanking you in advance,
Sharon
