Dear All
I have spent hours searching through my notes for a glaze I have been
using for years. I always had a bucket of it mixed up for the odd pot - I
need to make some more and not a trace of the recipe any where.
It is a glaze by Andrew Holden and published in his book which I have
also lost and can not even remember the title. This sort of thing is normal
for me, others may find it unacceptable and do the decent thing but "ropes
give so you might as well live".
The glaze is a Tan glaze that goes earth ( iron ) red when thin in both
reduction and oxidation. It raw glazes well .
It's the sort of glaze you put on the odd pot when you have forgotten
what you were going to glaze it in.
The search reminded me how much time I have spent on glaze research -
most of it fruitless. Sometimes the arrogance of the information would
persuade me to test again sometimes I would forget that I had done the test
and I would repeat it.
The strange thing is now that I have twigged to how it all works I have
lost interest - either that of the expense of testing has temporarily
frightened me off.
Any way the Andrew Holden Glaze also makes the body of a pot look like
it's been woodfired if you spray it ultra thin . It breaks well over form
and lines well . It's only disadvantage is that it is very soft ( does not
give a good ring when tapped ) - lots of stoneware glazes are like this
though.
So if any body has the recipe I would be grateful.
