Hi,

My husband and I are going to be moving to Lafayette, Indiana in June. =
Currently, we are living in Texas so my knowledge of Indiana is =
basically nothing. Are there any potters around the Lafayette area? =
Lafayette is where Purdue University is at. What is the pottery and art =
scene like around there? What and where are the good ceramic supply =
companies in and around the area? I know that Lafayette is one hour =
from Indianapolis and about 2 hours from Chicago so there must be =
something right?

Any input/help is greatly appreciated.

Grace

Having been born in Ft Wayne and now being a native of Orlando, Fl I'm
trying to think of something nice to say about Indiana. Well its nicer in
some respects than the Dakota, western Kansas, Eastern Montana, the Pan
Handle in Okalahoma and Death Valley. I went back for my 50th high school
reunion last fall. When I left I was delighted - I have no reason to go
back. Actually, the people are nice & I suspect it is good clay country.
P.S. sell your sun glasses.

Hello Grace,
I can tell you what I know, very little, of Northern IN and the clay
scene. In Indy, there is American Art and Clay Co., in Speedway there is
Brickyard ceramics a ceramic supply store. Whether they are 'good' or not I
don't know. I do know of potters that do business with them.
I do not know names of potters in Lafayette but I will ask another potter I
know, about that area, he went to college at Purdue.
Being from Southern Indiana, just above the Ohio River bordering KY, I
usually get supplies from KY, OH, TN.
As for the previous reply about Indiana, don't let negative attitudes give
you a bad perception of where you are headed.
Welcome to the State! The more potters the better...

Robert Moore, who just fired the wood kiln this weekend and integrated
Lowell Bakers sawdust technique, thanks Lowell.

Hi Grace,

I recently moved away from Indianapolis. I can assure you pottery is
alive and well in the Layfayette area. I'm ashamed to say I can't
recall the names of potters in the area (one lady named ____ Johnson is
very active locally), but one contact that will be good for you is a
group called the Indiana Potters Guild. It's based in Indianapolis, but
its a state-wide group and I know there are several Layfayette potters
that are members. Again, sorry I don't have a phone number for you, but
you can call the Indianapolis Art Center (317) 255-2464 or one of the
organizations R. Moore mentioned and one of them will surely have a
phone number for the Guild.

Regards, Bob
