Thanks very much. Dawn

Dawn, this question is very general, and so can only be answered in a
very general way.

of COURSE white earthenware clay mixed with water will give you a white
slip.

whetherthis slip will shrink too much or too little on your clay
whether this slip will be too soft, too dry, melt too much, melt too
little, or flake off, upon firing
whether this slip will work better thin or thick,
whether the underlying clay will show through,

WHO CAN SAY? You have given no clue as to what clay you are putting it
on and how hot you are firing it.

My advice , JUST TRY IT!!!!

that is really the only way to answer your specific question, using your
specific materials.
First try it without the tin .
Tin is expensive, no need to use it unless you need it.

Dawn,
We have used Laguna's B-Mix ground into a powder and mixed with water
forced through a vegie strainer to make a great whit slip. Put on
leather hard clay right after trimming. Mike Gordon

Hi Dawn,

We use our white throwing body as a white slip, to make it white, a " blue
white" you can add a very, and I mean a very small amount of cobalt to your
white slip. This has been common practice in Stoke -on- Trent with white
earthenware.
Remember the washing powders " You to can get a blue white" same with a
white
slip, as long as you know what you are doing.

Kind regards

I work on red earthenware at cone 03 and this is the one I like the best:

I'm not sure where it came from but I call it

FAVORITE 04 WHITE SLIP
kaolin 25
ball clay 25
frit 3195 15
flint 20
zircopax 10

screen it 80 mesh...then you can experiment with mason's stains and oxides.
the original recipe had 1/2 the zircopax. I tried tin once to increase
opacity,
but it had a disasterous effect on my clear glaze. It also works fine at
cone 2
on terra cotta.

LOOKING FOR INFO ON RE USE AND RECYCLING:

I'm looking for information on anything related to re use and recycling...
waste oil firing, sawdust firing....burning waste cardboard, paper,or wood
in a kiln fired with another primary fuel. Using ground glass in clays or
tile making..oddball ingredients in glazes like cement etc.

This is my first experience w/ clayart listserv...very helpfuland
interesting responses....overwhelming amount of mail though!

Monica: Here is the slip I use. It goes on leather hard and you can
dip pots in it as well. I have used it for over 25 years first with
combing and now with paper resist. If you want it whiter yet add 5%
zircopax/opax.
Best,
Tony

HI Monica;

Have you tried using the other china clay and see if they work? All
you need is a 100 - 200 gm to brush on some test tiles. Don't feel
limited. Recipes are only starting points.

Monica,

I use dry bagged Continental Clay's Super White clay
body. This is also a good flashing slip for soda or woodfire. I
just add water to the amount I need, and mix. No need to screen or
anything.

Maybe your clay supplier has a white clay that will work on
your clay body.

Monica...

Here is one I have posted before. I got it from a friend, Ann Arbor potter
I.B. Remsen. I have personally used it on both wet and leather hard clay,
fired everywhere from cone 06 through 12, all with zero problems. Takes
colorants well. Great for trailing and for marbling.

Remsen Slip

Tile 6 Kaolin 50
OM-4 Ball Clay 10
Silica 20
Custer Feldspar 20

Good luck with it.

Also, it is my understanding that Tile 6 kaolin was created as a domestic
substitute for Grolleg, so you shouldn't have much problem using it as a
substitute.

Take care.
