Dear Jocelyn and all,

The web site is fine - the correct address is:
http://www.nihon-kogeikai.com/KOGEITEN/KOGEITEN-048/KOGEITEN-048-00184-E.htm
l

In my post, somehow the "l" got dropped off the URL. Big sorry!

The url I provided for this beautiful piece is correct... it just seems
that the website went belly-up overnight!

Another way to find this site is to search on google for the phrase "glaze
with iridescent spots". Unfortunatley. not even the cached version of the
site contains the picture.

unfortunate.

Well, yes, it is a remarkable surface which has been produced.
However, I think this is a bit more complex than a special sort of =
Tenmoku which does these things after it has been applied.
There is more to this surface than "Black Tenmoku".
The "Iridescent Spots" look to be applications of other materials which =
have either been randomly spattered onto the Tenmoku surface or put in =
place before the main glaze was applied so that they erupted through the =
main glaze during firing. Or it may come from multiple firings
I can discern three colours in the markings. There is a medium blue halo =
around a dull red centre and white flecks which may be reflections =
rather than a white glaze.
The notion of "Iridescence" seems to suggest that this may have be the =
effect of post firing "On Glaze" decoration with enamels and lustres. =
There may be clues as to methodology in "A Potter's Book" by Bernard =
Leach (153-4) since he supplies some recipes for Japanese red and other =
coloured overglaze enamels.
Yes, a good case for a little detective work.
