When I was an undergraduate (creative writing and literature) in the
very early 80's. we writers were told the average annual income of a
writer was $3000. We were advised to paper our walls with rejection
slips and to make a game of it. A rejection signed by the editor was
especially prized. Of course, that's not pottery, but I also recall
reading that the percentage of artists who make a living at their work
is in the single digits when you take out university salaries or other
teaching jobs.
