To those who do "Halo" effect Raku (sometimes called "Ghost" Raku;

I'm going to try this with a friend who rakus later in the week. If anyone
has
comments that they think might be helpful, I'd like to hear from you, on the
list of course, but also with a private CC to me here
so
I am certain to receive it in a timely way.

Thanks in advance,

Helen

Recipe and procedure for Soldner Halo Raku effect:
==================================================

50% Copper Carbonate; 50% Red Iron Oxide, by weight.

Water to make a mixture the consistency of milk.

Make up ahead of time:

CMC gum 1-2 teaspoons in a 1 kg jar of hot water.

Let stand overnight, then stir.

Add to oxide mixture as required to make liquid flow easily from brush.

Use to decorate pots to be fired in Raku process.

Prepare metal pail with balls of paper lining bottom and sides, and
liberally
sprinkle fine wood shavings over all of this.

Fire in Raku kiln as usual.

Finish by smoking pot immediately in pail of paper balls and shavings,
holding
pot with Raku tongs and moving it down into the combustibles for a few
seconds,
then raising pot out of the reduction atmosphere to reoxidize the area
adjacent
to the oxide painting, where the heat from the oxide remains high.

Repeat this last smoking procedure several times, checking for an increasing
deposit of grey on the pot more distant from the oxide and looking for a
bright
"halo" of unreduced clay surrounding the wash painting.

Should be spectacular!
