I just bought 50# of paper clay, and have been having fun experimenting with
bowls, figures, and sculptured pieces. I do like it, particularly being able
to add wet to dry. In reading Gaults book, Paper Clay, she says that you can
use regular slips for decoration. On regular clay. I generally use Duncan and
mayco slips and fire, then continue with Concepts for finishing before I
glaze and refire. It sounds like I can do this with paperclay...but I'm a
little concerned about the "fit"...since the pclay doesn't shrink as much,
will the slip peel off? I'm going to test it, of course, but I'm sure
someone has tried it. Does it really work? Anything I should know?
Thanks! Cate

Hello Cate and hello clayarter
Do you use slip or engob?
If it is engob not a problem if you use slip, than it might be the most complicated
question.
I will try to help you.
>From Gault's book you learnt that this new materia, the paperclay , is a very forgiving
claybody.
You also learnt to smear it over a regular claybody.
We cannot know , Duncan will not tell us what they add into their slip!
Does it work on wet clay?
does it work on leather hard? Bone dry?.
Try this: make some tiles, cut them some how, not with a ruler:
On one tile apply on wet
On the second wet leather hard
and so on.
Another option:
Make slip out of the same paperclay you use add Masson stains or oxides mix well
with a drill or a mixer put it in a slip trailer O==> The rubber kind with the
little tiny hole.
If the hole is too tiny cut the end a bit.
I shall upload some pictures to my paperclay page tonight and tomorrow:

About tonight Cate, we in the middle east besides the mass also sleep in your day
and active at nights( when the sun is shining)

Hi Cate,
I make my "paperclay" from my clay slop and very fine wood powder. I do it
that way because a) I am cheap and b) it is easier to cut, shape, trim, etc.
I then brush on several coats of regular slip clay onto the surface to have
a smooth base for my underglazes. This is lowfire whiteware.
Hope this helps.
