Hey Folks!

Two years ago at NCECA in Charlotte I bought like a $5 or $10 slip trailer
that was ingeniously simple - a red rubber suction ball with like a needle
used to inflate basketballs. Now I have no memory who I bought it from -
but I and a couple of other friends need more.

Does anyone know what I'm talking about (!) and if so, who sells them?

Thanks,

Jonathan in DC

I got one of these at Highwater some time ago. You might try
them. www.highwaterclays.com

Jonathan;

Check out Pine Ridge pottery in Alexandria...when I was there last Saturday,
I saw a slip trail bulb (or whatever you wnat to call it) that I think more
or less matches your description. I think. It was yellow, not red, but
hopefully color was not the important factor.

Jonathan, I don't know who sold the slip trailers. But you can make
your own quite simply. Get some syringes from the drugstore, get
a couple of packages of basketball inflator needles. Slip the needle
into the end of the syringe, clip off the tip of the needle so that the
slip comes out the end and not the side(s) of the needle. The needles
tend to mash flat when cut, but if you push a piece of wire into the
needle BEFORE you clip the end off, the needle will stay round, and
you can remove the wire by pushing through the other end, or
squeezing the bulb of the syringe. These work really well.

JOnathan,
I don't know about the slip trailer needle, but I see you are in DC and you
must go to the Silk Road festival on the Mall opening June 26 and report
back to us. I was just in DC and saw them setting up for it--building
fabulous replicas of tiled mosques, lots of bamboo huts, tribal rug patterns
stencilled onto walls. There are going to be live demos of pottery and
tribal arts, to say the least!
If I could have stayed longer I sure would have to see the events.

Jonathon -

The red rubber bulb slip trailers are available from Highwater Clays here in
Asheville. They call them "Pete Pinell's Red Bulb Slip Trailers". Price is $5.50.

You can see one in their online catalog at this address:
http://www.highwaterclays.com/handtools/cooltools2.html#pp

If for some reason that doesn't work, go to the web site at www.highwaterclays.com
and click on hand tools.

PS. Congratulations on your great work for Empty Bowls in DC!

Dannon is right. There is no reason to buy a "slip trailer"
because it is really just an ear syringe with an inflator needle
stuck in the end.
If you have a grinding wheel, it will work great for removing
the end of the needle with the holes out the side. Use a light
touch - no worry about mashing the tube while cutting it.

The bulbs for slip trailers can be purchased at a drugstore , although you
may not want to know what their purpose is.... The needle ? at any " Have it
all" type store , names I'll not mention - they get too much free
advertising as it is.

These are not what you need for Pete Pinell's slip trailer. You
need a red rubber bulb used for inserting pipettes. Instead of a
pipette, you insert a basketball inflating needle. I got mine at
http://www.carolina.com
It's a scientific supply site. Search it for Red Rubber Bulb.
Order the largest size: 2 oz capacity.

They also have syringes up to 60 cc capacity for Currie type
glaze experiments, as well as graduated cylinders and cheap
covered containers. Also jumbo frogs and odorless dogfish, if
that's your thing. Or your own skeleton!
