Any Texas potters want to try helping this person?

Subject: trash can kiln

| Hello,
| I was trying to find out something about building a simple kiln out of
trash
| cans and came upon your discussion group. I hope it is OK to write to you.
|
| Years ago in a Foxfire book, there were instructions for making a trash
can
| kiln. It involved a steel trash can, sand base and a fire but that is all
I
| can remember.
|
| We have a girl living with us who loves to build pots and no one around us
| who will fire her homemade pots. I was hoping to find out how (very
exactly)
| we could build, fire and glaze etc. her pots here. Any advice for me?
|
| A little about me by the by. I am a fine arts person and crafts person
from
| way back. Never did discover the finer points of kilns other than to give
| them to a teacher or pottery place to fire for me. Here in this small area
| of Texas we have lots of potters and some classes on ceramics but no
public
| kilns or simple classes. A local community art center will allow her or
| anyone to "learn" how to build a pot and then fire it for $60 for the ONE
| class. She already knows how to build a pot and we can't get any other
| lessons beyond that. Where can we learn???? How to fire, what is a good
| kiln, glazes etc? Community college is out of the question too because she
| is from out of state and the fees for non resident is astonishing. I work
| full time so I can't go in her stead.. all problematic.
|
| There is a large used electric kiln for sale at an antique/junque emporium
I
| am affiliated with for $353.00 which I thought was a fair price but after
| reading the posts on kiln burn out I'm not sure this one is even
functioning
| or how to run it. Help? How could I tell and how would I hook it up?
| Suppliers for cones and those little separators spiky things that keep the
| piece off of the bottoms? Is this a bad idea from the getgo? Man, it has
| been YEARS since I have done any sculpture or clay work or pots....
|
| I know I have thrown a lot at you and I appreciate your taking the time
just
| to read all of this. thank you. If you can help with any or all of our
| questions, I would be so grateful.
