I took my ancient Giffin grip out the other day to use it on a thin
porcelain pot and I could not get the thing to work. It's been ages since I
used it so maybe I'm doing something wrong here!
The "O" ring is missing, but I took it off a long time ago and it worked fine
without it, so something else is amiss, I think.
The problem is that the grip doesn't move the holders toward the center. I've
tried placing them on various places, and slots along the edge and nothing I
do seems to make them move. AARGH! I know I must be doing something wrong, or
there is something wrong with the unit, but for the life of me I can't figure
out what! It's such a simply tool and yet I can't figure out the why it won't
work.
I have used this thing in the past, so I know how it is supposed to work. I'm
really scratching my head over this one!
Any help would be greatly appreciated. :-)
Thanks!

To put the holders into the Grip slots, you have to twist the
upper plate around til you can see notches in the lower plate.
These allow the holders to slide in and catch onto the spiral
tracks that will pull them in and tighten them. You have to push
hard on the holders to make sure they are all the way into the
notches.
To say again: you can't just push the holders on anywhere along
the edge of the lower plate. There is only one position and you
need to look for it on the lower plate by twisting the upper
plate so you can see the whole perimeter of the lower plate.
Email me privately if you still have trouble....

try rubbing some ivory soap on the innerds... by that I mean take the 2
pieces apart and open it up and the plastic grooves that slide together
should be soaped with the dry ivory soap... dont ask me why ivory but
thats the soap I use .... 100% pure ;o) if ya aint got any try some other
brand you have available and if it doesnt work go get ivory ... ps this
is good thing to do every now and again as it helps it slide easier...
hope this helps ... ps the o ring and shims are important ... highwater
clay carries pieces parts for the giffin grip and does sell the shims and o
rings . your potter friend Cat

Hi June,
Cat's suggestion is a good one... but you might also try picking up a can of
spray Silicone (similar to a WD-40 can) at your local hardware store. Spray
silicone works for all kinds of things (doorlocks, sliding doors & windows,
etc.) where you don't want to use an oily substance that attracts dirt... I'm
sure it's work great on the Giffen Grip too. Just my two cents.
Good luck!
Ken

June: two suggestions:
1. try reversing the holders and jiggling the moveable top disc.
2. call Griffin!
good luck
