art centers that deprive the spirit

Hi,

It wasn't that long ago that I was forced into the
don't do this or that and no making anything for
yourself among a host of other things. All this coming
from the head director for the area where I worked
that had half his lake house furniture and abandoned
cars among his friends hidden junk at the arts center
quietly out of the way of the mayor or whoever might
have cared? We had to work around all that and close
our eyes.
Of course jobs like that are enough to stress out any
art director or anyone else that gives a hoot about
what they do. In order to properly teach one usually
needs to produce. Since most these jobs are meager in
wages at best the minor trade off shouldn't be that
big a deal.
Its a matter of who is actually in charge and if they
have enough common sense to understand the reason of
hiring art directors is to get the best possible
person for the job at all costs so long as its within
terms that reflect equal footing on both sides. One
sided contracts or deals are never worth the paper
they are written on. Needless to say I am long gone
and love being back at my own studio producing and
being a normal human once again.

Gosh Jeff, I don't understand the position of the art
center
considering instructors art work done during class
time as "theirs" (
meaning the property of the institution ) or "double
dipping".

Instructors in ceramics at many colleges I have
checked out do some of
their own work during class time and sell it in
galleries etc. No
problemo.
