TONY FERGUSON =B7 EXHIBITION
June 8- August 17, 2002

"It is a relationship between myself, the clay, glaze and firing process.=
.it
embodies all the five elements--earth, air, fire, water, ether, and their
enveloping relationships of fusion and timelessness."

Ferguson's most recent body of work is a further development of his
influence from the ancient Shigaraki and Bizen tradition of singe-fired
stoneware and Chinese porcelain. This "raw firing" technique is the most
traditional form of glazing and firing, yet few contemporary clay artists
work in this process because of its unreliability and high percentage of
loss. Ferguson, however, views the potential for loss as the potential to
create something extraordinary. He is attracted to the sculptural qualiti=
es
of the stoneware clay-its earthiness and rawness of being and the feminin=
ity
and gentleness of porcelain.

Ferguson's works are finished with traditional and American shino, ash, a=
nd
salt glazes that produce atmospheric interactions like green gems of pool=
ed
ash that mark the heavily grogged, iron-laden stoneware vessels. He attem=
pts
to create forms that will have a relationship to the conditions of fire a=
nd
flame, ash and cooling that will take place during the firing. "With its
torn and rough surfaces on the outside, its smooth and gentle surfaces on
the inside, my work is about struggle and development, searching and
finding."

Artist's reception will be held at the Waters of Superior, Duluth.
