cmc gum prep?

A few years ago I was told that hot water can seriously decrease the
effectiveness of CMC. That was from someone who had worked in the
technical end of the ceramics industry.

I am trying to prepare a CMC Gum solution for applying over a glaze to =
make it less porous so that overglaze stain decoration can be applied =
easier. The trouble is I haven't done this in many years and can't =
quite remember the process. I vaguely remember sifting the gum into a =
blender filled with hot water, blending, and the allowing the solution =
to sit overnight before using.

Does anyone on the List have more info on preparing this material? In =
particular the amount of gum to water. TIA.

Hi Rafael,
I got this out of a ceramic book:
CMC: (use as 1/3 water content)
1 gallon water to 130.66 grams CMC
1 Pint water to 16.33 grams CMC
WAIT 24 HOURS

this ratio works for me.

Hello Rafael
This is how I do it:
I boil water. 2 liters.
the plastic jar of the 100 grams of CMC the way I buy it I make to small holes.
II pour the CMC slowly while mixing with a drill with a mixer.
The solution: is 1 CMC 20 water.
when I have to add 1 gram of CMC I add 20 of the solution. In some cases I add a
spoon or so without high math.
People usually add it before sieving, most of my glazes I do not sieve, or better I try to
rebuild them I decrease feldspar add frit and increase the kaolin to get better
suspension

Rafael,

This might be of interest to you: a long established technique used by
Majolica Painters is to add a dessert spoon of sugar to one Gallon of
the glaze mix (I'm talking UK here but I don't think it's critical). On
drying on the pot the dissolved sugar migrates to the surface of the
glaze, giving it a crisp hard coat which is ideal to paint on.

Rafael
We make up a CMC solution about PVA woodworking glue consistency.
Take a 2 litre plastic juice container, add 30 gm CMC powder,
add 200 ml hot water, shake until dispersed, (note: dispersed,
not dissolved), make up to 2 litres with cold water, keep shaking to taste.
Des
Caution... I once made up a batch using an old juice container,
didn't notice the container had become sun brittled,
sat down to watch TV news & shake container.
Container disintegrated, 2 litres very, very sticky gum all over me,
lounge chair, floor ( fortunately cork tiles), wall, what a mess!
Jan laughed herself helpless at my dripping glasses & whiskers !!
