Hi-- Omigosh! After 8 years, today I finally got a booth at the =
Michigan Guild Ann Arbor Summer Art Fair (off the wait list/emergency =
replacement list). I know that many of you will be there in one of the =
shows--any words of wisdom? (besides bring inventory?) Anything special =
that a first timer might not be aware of? My booth is (tentatively) 20 =
something on State Street, a curbside location. Engineer Phil already =
has plans for a floor and CAD drawing of how to fit us in the booth, so =
I think we have that part handled. I think. Is parking a nightmare? =
Any suggestions concerning what sells well, or is it the usual crap =
shoot only bigger? I hope we are all too busy to visit, but I would =
love to actually meet some of you. I will post my booth number when I =
get my confirmation pack and hope others who will be there will also. =
Boy is this going to be a busy couple of weeks!

smiling real big today! =20

As a former member of this organization. From almost it's inception to 1995 (former Board member, Rules member, Standards chair, and Board Chair) I can tell you a few things.
First, follow every rule religiously. The rules committee isn't referred to as the gestapo for nothing. Six by ten means six by ten. Not six feet one inch. Rules members have been known to measure. You are luck in that you are curb side. You can sit on the sidewalk probably in the shade. You are unlucky that you are curbside. The crowd tends to walk down the middle of the street. You are lucky because you are across from the Michigan Union. You can go in there to use the restrooms (go up to the third floor to avoid a line), get something to eat (in the basement) or just get out of the heat. There's a lounge on the second floor. Lots of couches and chairs. Go up to sleep a little.
NO ON SITE STORAGE IS ALLOWED! Do not expect to be able to stack up some boxes of stock. You will be told to remove it. Do not put any part of your display on the sidewalk. You will be told to remove it.
The closest parking is about two blocks away. You can park at the fraternity but they charge a lot. $100 in 1994. You will be ticketed at the meters. Just count on paying it. The city doesn't care if there is an art fair going on. Be sure to have someone who can run for stock. If sales are good you'll be running all day.
Make sure that what's in your booth is what's in your slides. If you deviate from it (like lots of one-of-a-kind in your slides but production items in the booth) you could be told to remove items or even leave the fair.
Don't put boxes, chairs, or anything else on the grass behind the sidewalk. The Guild requires the cooperation of the University to keep the fair site. This fair used to be at a different location. But people were so inconsiderate of the university classes going on that the Guild lost the site. Ever since it has vigilantly policed the fair to avoid the wrath of the university.
Ann Arbor is not what it used to be when it comes to sales. Attendance is down for all three fairs and sales have been affected. But maybe this year it will come back. Just don't go expecting to sell out (like lots of us used to do).
Good luck, hope you have a good show, and before you go pray for bearable weather.
