borax or borax frit?

updated sat 6 jul 02

Sometime around June 20th, there was a post with a recipe for a
white slip from Hands in Clay. I copied the recipe (below), but not the
poster's email address (argh! won't do that again) and thus am
sending this to the list for help...

Hands in Clay white Slip (cone6-11)
Kaolin 230
Ball Clay 220
Feldspar 200
Flint 300
Borax 50

I'm really new at mixing and using glazes and need all the help I can
get, please! I bought borax as listed in the recipe, but can't get all of it
to dissolve in the slip. Some of it remains in crystal form after trying to
screen it 3 times thru an 80 mesh sieve.

I'm wondering if there's a method for using borax that would help with
this? And I'm also wondering if this should be borax frit instead? Any
advise on or off the list would be appreciated!

This is what we have:

Kaolin.............. 23.00%
Ball Clay........... 22.00%
Feldspar............ 20.00%
Flint............... 30.00%
Borax............... 5.00%

In this case when you prepare the slip, put in a different jar the borax. Add to it the
proper amount of water that should be for the slip as boiled water and stir well than
pour it to the main mix and stir well
