photodeluxe/scanner question

updated fri 12 jul 02

Merrie Boerner on mon 8 jul 02

My Astra2000U/P UMAX scanner came with a Photo Deluxe program which I used
successfully in the past. Now, when I scan a photo, there are lines of color
throughout the whole background (where there is no picture) and all over the
photograph. Any idea about which Gremlin is screwing up my scanner ?

I can imaging. a friend of mine that installed Norton anti virus told me that after that
his photo images handling program could not work anymore.

When installing a new program, it is often necessary to close down Norton
anti virus while installing the program.
That could be the cause of the problem.

Merrie,

I don't think the problem is with Photo Deluxe, but with the scanner
software. I, too, used the same scanner, and got glitches like the one you
described, from time to time.

I suggest reinstalling the software that came with your scanner. Also, there
is a website to look at:
http://www.umax.com/support/ , for help with your scanner.

This scanner is made for earlier versions of Windows (3.1, '95, and '98) and
slower pentium-type computers. If it's being used on a moreso contemporary
computer or Windows ME, 2000, or XP, it may not work well at all.

I bought myself a new scanner with my new computer, since the old UMAX
wasn't compatible.

Best wishes!

Merrie,

if you have another computer available you might install the photo
upload software to it and try the same thing. you will learn if the
problem is upstream to both computers (is the scanner), or unique
to the first computer/software. basic but useful info?

before doing anything drastic, try using the scanner from another piece of
software - that will eliminate one variable. if you don't have any suitable
programme, then download a shareware graphics programme and try that.

However.... i don't think it's the graphics software either - I had similar
problems with a Umax, although only with snow scenes. downloading different
drivers didn't help [might do in your case], and i now have a HP
scanner......

Richard in Bournemouth UK - wettest place in England yesterday, according to
the BBC. that will do wonders for the local tourist trade.

Merrie,
Have you looked at the printer as the problem? Do the line appear when you
print? I had the same problem, check the ink cartridge and try cleaning your
printer. look under printer, properties etc.

ANYBODY WANT A FREE SCANNER ?????? IT IS OBSOLETE AND INFESTED WITH
GREMLINS.
First, let me thank the 10 Clayarters who tried to help me solve my computer
problem.....I tried everything....even called in my sister the
geek......every time we had one problem solved, another would show it's ugly
head.....I almost threw the scanner out the door. I have decided that,
even though I enjoy a good problem solving challenge, this *&$$(*)(*F)*^^&%
scanner has gotten the best of me. I give up....wasted too much time !
If I ever have photos to scan, I'll take them to my husband's office and let
the secretary do it.
My next challenge......
getting familiar with my new digital camera,
camping at Lowell's cabin at 10,800 feet above sea level,
hiking uncharted mountain paths,
and living without electricity or cell phones for 6 days.
I'll let you know (if I survive) how the trip goes, when I return.

Merrie

anything above 3000 metres sounds wonderful - haven't been there for too
long... Nothing quite like looking down on cloud tops

i suspect taking scanner with you and using as a sledge if you get above the
snow line is best approach.......

they are still useful, even with a digital camera - good news is that
quality keeps going up, and price keeps dropping. what you can get now for
not a lot is vastly superior to what was on the market 3- 4 years ago.

i was joking about taking the scanner up 't hill, by the way - in case this
awakens any thoughts that i want to see mountains shrouded in plastic.

besides, that's already been done

PS - if you're taking new digital camera with you, double the number of
batteries you think you will need, then take twice as many again.
