firing results from chronicle of a kiln, part v

Okay, I'm getting it. I'm glad that I wadded
because there were still some runs, but overall, the
glazes are much happier with downfiring. Not even a
hint of eighties bathroom peach in this one. A large
chip and dip platter split in half, but I'm sure
that's more of a handling issue than a kiln problem,
and one beautiful bottle tipped off it's wads into
another beautiful bottle. Anyone need a double vase?
Hahaha.
I'm finding some good glazing combos, and perhaps
I just need to incorporate some glaze-run-resistant
bases until I have this figured out. At least this
time there were only two ruined shelves, rather than
the typical all of them, and probably only a twenty
percent fatality rate. Not great, but my first three
firings were around eighty to ninety, so I'm getting
better. That's a lot of pots to lose in a thirty two
cubic foot kiln.
I suppose it's time to invest in a good grinding
wheel. My couch is covered in seconds which could all
be firsts with a little tlc. And the shard pile
grows...
Jules, in cloudy St. Helena, SC, where
it should pour down rain for a few days, and reverse
this little drought we've had for a few years. Since
the kiln goddesses seem to have helped, I'm thinking
of doing a rain dance, but I heard it doesn't count
unless you're naked, and I'm already suffering from
mosquito bites on my rear end from peeing on my lemon
tree last night. Maybe I'll make a rain goddess.

Jules,  One thing that may help you save your kiln shelves from glaze runs is to make what some of us call "biscuits" -- they are little round and square flat bisqued pieces (which you make) on which you can put your pieces in a glaze firing.   If the glaze runs, it goes on those biscuits that you've placed under the piece.  These things have saved my shelves numerous times.  Good luck on future firings,  Celeste
