I don't think this is a question of temperature velocity, moving in =
either direction.
It's more about having the whole of the fabric of a pot achieve a =
simultaneous phase change when free quartz is present. When this happens =
there is no stress differential between parts of the pot. However, if =
one side is slightly cooler than another as the temperature is changing =
the phase change and the localised increase or decrease in size will =
impose stress which has the potential to create a fracture. The greater =
the temperature difference between part the more obvious will be the =
disaster.
Beyond that, it gets complicated.
